Daily Life of a Teen in Ulaanbaatar

Introduction:

16 year old Enkhmaral, who goes by Maral, is a junior in high school living with her family in Ulaanbaatar, the capital and largest city of Mongolia. Maral has grown up in this busy urban center, where almost half of Mongolia’s population lives, giving her daily exposure to both the fast pace of city life and the traditions that shape modern Mongolia. Her perspective as a high school student in Ulaanbaatar offers a window into what it is like to grow up in a city that serves as the country’s political, economic and cultural hub.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

I usually do not eat breakfast, but if I do it is usually something like toast and jam. For lunch and dinner I eat typical Mongolian food.

What is your house like?:

My house is simple, cozy and clean because I clean it every day.

What chores do you have at home?:

I am responsible for mopping, sweeping, vacuuming and cooking.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My mom is an engineer. She works at the train tracks teaching people about safety.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

School starts at 7:45 a.m. and sometimes ends at 12:15 p.m. I typically get home around 3.
