The Natural World of Senegal

Introduction:

Living in a metropolitan area of more than one million people, you would think you wouldn't see a lot of nature. Not true! Take a trip with me to the local fish market and see a sampling of what the ocean that borders Dakar on three sides has to offer.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

There is an ever-changing variety of fish at the fish market, depending on the time of year or even the time of day! Today, mostly mullet and barracuda were represented.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I felt like there is NO way I'm going swimming. Nope.

Where does it live?:

The Atlantic Ocean is teeming with life and the waters around Senegal are famous for their bounty.

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Notice the barracuda are streamlined predators (look at those teeth!) who rely on speed to catch their prey. Today, most were about 3-4 ft long, but I have seen them much bigger. There are a lot of species here they can feed on.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Fishermen are probably the biggest danger to the barracuda. The barracuda can be caught by line, but are also ensnared by the fishermans' large nets, which can stretch several hundred yards.
