Getting around in Finland

Introduction:

How do you get to school? Do you take the school bus? Can you walk there?

In Finland, I usually walk or cycle! When it's very cold (below 15°F), I take the city bus, called the Linkki. When I lived in the U.S., I drove my car everywhere since it wasn't safe to cycle or walk. I appreciate how active I am every day by cycling to get everywhere!

How do people get around?:

Most students in Jyväskylä walk, cycle or take the bus. I usually cycle everywhere! It's very safe, easy and I get at least 30 minutes of movement every day.

There are plenty of bike parking spots around the city and at my university. Not only are Finns very active, they are also super trustworthy. As long as my bike is locked, no one will bother it or try to steal it.

Fun fact: in Jyväskylä's city center, heated pipes under the sidewalks and roads keep them snow-free all winter! This makes cycling and walking in city center super easy to navigate. Outside of city center, they regularly plow sidewalks and clear snow, so it's still possible to cycle and walk safely.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I love to cycle, and I always have so much fun cycling. Once I get to my destination after cycling there, I feel really happy and energized. Spending time outdoors and moving my body always makes me feel better and more focused.
