German is the main language spoken in Germany. The language is called Deutsch in German and Germany is called Deutschland. Marburg also has many fellow international students so I hear many different languages on any given day! I began learning German at my university in the U.S. and studied it there for two years. Now, I am going to class to learn more here. There is so much to learn when speaking a new language, but being in it has been really important to understand German culture and society better!
Some words in German are very similar to English, like the word for park is Park in German, but some are completely different! The word for ambulance is Krankenwagen, which translates to "sick car". Many German words are compound words like this.
Germany uses the euro, which uses the symbol € instead of the $ that we are used to. Currently €1 is equal to $1.16. The euro is used in many countries across Europe. This means that I can go from Germany to France to Italy to Spain and never use a different type of money.
