A Day in the Life of a Rwandan Student

Introduction:

Hello! My name is Kelsey, and I am in Senior 6 (12th grade) at Saint Ignatius High School.

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

I usually don't eat breakfast because I leave so early. Since our lunch is very big, I usually have just tea, bread and fruit for dinner.

What is your house like?:

We have a big house with five bedrooms: one for my parents and then one for each of my three siblings and me. We have a small garden outside and a gate that surrounds the house and driveway. Our kitchen is small with a gas stove and fridge. We have a living room with a TV and a dining room for when my grandparents come over for dinner.

What chores do you have at home?:

We don't do chores--we have a cleaner who works at our house (this is very common in Kigali).

What jobs do your parents have?:

My mother is a librarian, and my father works for an insurance company.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

School starts at 8:15 a.m. We go home at either 5:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m., depending on whether we have a study session.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I live close to school, so I walk. It takes about 20 minutes.
