Intercultural events are my happy place, and once I was there, I felt like I truly belonged. Everyone at my table was so kind and open—it felt natural. That first meeting was a turning point, and I haven’t missed a single meeting since.
3. What kinds of activities or events does the circle organize?
ESS organizes language exchange events and fun off-campus activities like trips to temples and shrines, parties and BBQs. We’re planning a Welcome Party in June—it’s potluck style, and I’m bringing a 10-piece bucket of fried chicken. There’s also a barbecue coming up in July (I haven’t decided what I’ll bring yet). I’m especially looking forward to the Welcome Party. Fried chicken, especially KFC, is really popular in Japan for parties and holidays like Christmas. I wonder if some Japanese students will bring fried chicken too. If they do, we’ll have all the fried chicken we can eat!
4. What has been your favorite experience or memory in the circle so far? How has it impacted you?
My favorite memory so far was going to the izakaya (like a bar) with the club. What made this event special was the feeling of being included. I didn’t feel overlooked or excluded—I felt genuinely accepted. Plus, I made a lot of new friends that night. That sense of belonging really stayed with me.
5. What challenges have you faced when joining?
