Honestly, I haven’t faced any real challenges. Even though some of the Japanese members are still beginners at English we’re still able to connect through shared experiences, mutual curiosity and a kind, patient energy. These things create a bridge between us even when words falter.
6. How have the members made you feel welcome or included? Introduce one key encounter that shifted your experience.
One moment that really stood out to me was when I walked into a meeting and four Japanese girls I’ve become close with exclaimed, “Denny!!!” with so much excitement. It was heartwarming. It made me feel seen and appreciated.
What I also love is that Japanese people often smile at me—even though I can sometimes look unfriendly when I do not mean to be. Some people misread my "resting" expression as being serious or intimidating. However, that's just my natural expression! Even if I'm having the best day ever, I still tend to carry an intense expression. Regardless, the Japanese students, both men and women, seem able to look past that. On meeting, they smile first, and that makes a big difference. Being welcomed like that has made me want to be the one to smile first now—and I do it often.
7. Have you picked up any new skills, hobbies, or cultural insights through this circle?
Yes! I’ve had some really eye-opening conversations about dating in Japan.
