My name is Derek Gutierrez. I am 19 years old and I am in my second year of college at Syracuse University. It is very cold in Syracuse, so I decided to change it up a bit and go to a warmer climate. This semester, I'll be studying in Tainan, Taiwan, where it is warm and sunny most days! Although Taiwan will be my home for a few months, my real home is Holbrook, New York. Growing up, I learned a lot about different cultures and languages through books. Now I study international relations, focusing on cultures and the relationships between the countries of Asia. Here in Taiwan, I will be learning a third language: Mandarin! I already speak Spanish and English, and I am hoping that being in Taiwan will teach me new skills. I hope you are all prepared to join me on my travels to learn new languages, new histories and new cultures. I can't wait to share this journey with you!
