Every Saturday afternoon is dedicated to “house mouse,” another unique term used at the South Pole. Everyone rotates through tasks, from cleaning toilets to shoveling stairs, in order to keep our home tidy.
And after leaving the ice, some of the commissioning work will continue from “up north,” which is how we refer to anything happening not on the Antarctic continent. What an incredible season of work we’ve had! I have two more installments before leaving the ice, so check back in next week.
I wintered at the South Pole in 2022, so I know how much fun Camille and Alicia are in for. Some part of me is jealous, wanting to stay. But the draw to see trees and eat ice cream is too strong! Best of luck to the entire 2026 winterover team at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station!
