Teamwork on Ice: Preparing for the IceCube Upgrade in Antarctica

That was a central theme throughout our training—getting the job done and making sure everyone gets home to their dogs, kids, and families with as many fingers and toes as they arrived with. Holy smokes! This is where I come in: my role is safety officer. I’m working with a colleague off-ice, but I’ll be the boots-on-the-ground person. It’s no small task, but thankfully, it’s everyone’s responsibility. While I’ll serve as the go-to safety expert, each individual and shift lead will be accountable for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Phew. I’m glad it’s not all on my shoulders.

To anyone out there reading this, do you have any tips on team building? Have you ever played icebreaker games at the start of a school year, summer camp, or with a new team? And what about safety? Do you think about it in your classroom or on the sports field? I bet you buckle your seat belt every time you get in a car. Or stop to tie your shoe when it comes undone. Or apply sunscreen before spending the day outside. All of those things are part of my job, too!

Enjoy these pictures from our training—they tell the story even better than words this time!
