Some foods that I tried include jjajeongmyeon, tteokbeokki (the spicy rice cake that I've mentioned in previous posts), soondubu jjigae (spicy tofu stew), bibimbap and even traditional Korean porridge. Another dish that many people might not be familiar with is naengmyeon or spicy cold chewy noodles. This dish is served in a big metal bowl and comes with a ball of thin noodles in a clear broth. In order to keep the dish cold, crushed ice is actually put into the broth! The noodles are topped with chopped vegetables, a boiled egg and last but not least, slices of pear. Naengmyeon is traditionally served in the summer, but I braved the cold and ordered it in the winter. Needless to say, I was very cold after eating it, but it would be the perfect refreshing lunch in the summertime!
Much of the food that I've tried here has made me feel cozy and at home, while also making me feel invigorated. Most of the Korean food that I've ordered comes out of the kitchen piping hot-often times in hot stone bowls! When you eat your food, you can feel it warming up your body. Most of the Korean restaurants that I've been to in Seoul are family-owned and rather small as well. All of these elements create a cozy atmosphere that I really enjoy. The food itself makes me feel invigorated because of its fragrant spices and healthy ingredients. Your stomach will thank you for all of the vegetables and fermented foods you eat while in Seoul!
