The Festival of the Lanterns

On the night of the festival, my friends and I met for dinner at another friend's house, then walked to the piazza, or public square. We arrived at around 8pm when the festivities began. We sat on the steps of the piazza and watched musicians and other performers entertain the crowds.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This holiday was created in the 17th century to celebrate the birthday of the Virgin Mary and takes place every year on September 7th. Originally, farmers would walk from the countryside to Piazza Santissima Annunziata, the public square in front of the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. To make it to the church by nightfall, the pilgrims began their journey before dawn. They carried lanterns to light their way.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

When the festival originally began, farmers would bring with them loads of fresh produce and handmade crafts. At the end of the celebration, there would be a large farmers’ market, and the farmers would sell their goods. This connection to local agriculture has been lost over the years. Today, the festival is more an excuse to come together to celebrate something fun and beautiful!
