Travel News

How far did I travel this week?:

This weekend I visited Verona, a city in Northern Italy that is 90 miles from Bologna. I took a one hour train ride to the town. Verona is famous for being the setting of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It was also a major city during the Roman empire and have a well-preserved Roman arena much like the famous Colosseum in Rome, but much smaller.

How far have I traveled on this journey so far?:

I began my time in Italy by arriving in Rome from Detroit, MI for my Fulbright program's orientation, which was an eight hour flight that covered over 4,600 miles! I stayed in Rome for a week, where I visited villas and museums with my group. Then I took the train from Rome to Bologna to move into my apartment.

How did I get around this week?:

To get to the research institute where I work, I walk about 10 minutes. To get downtown to the center of Bologna, I take the bus. Most people in Italian cities don't have cars, except for very small cars that can fit one or two people. These cars can't go faster than 30 miles per hour, perfect for navigating Italian cobblestones!

What was the most interesting place I visited this week?:

Verona has an excellent museum of medieval art, housed inside of an old castle.
