Aloha mai kākou and tēnā koutou! My name is Emily Lau, and I am excited to get to know you all over the next few months as I tell you about my adventures here in Aotearoa. I also want to hear more about all the amazing things you are learning about! For now, I’m going to start by introducing myself.
My dad is from Kuliʻouʻou and my mom is from a tiny town on the East Coast called Tilton in New Hampshire. I was born in Honolulu and moved around in Kaimukī and Mānoa while I was growing up. We loved going to the Kaimukī library and swimming at Kaimana Beach. There used to be a Barnes & Noble bookstore above Kahala Mall, and my mom would bring us there to read books and drink hot chocolate when it was too hot to go to the beach. My dad loves to body surf at Awāwamalu (Sandy Beach), and sometimes we would have a cookout there after sunset. My dad would make kalbi or shoyu chicken and we would eat it with lots of poi and rice.
Then, when I was 10, my mom wanted to go back to the East Coast (she’s one of those people who prefers winter to summer!). We moved to this tiny island called Islesboro off the coast of Maine. To get onto the island, you have to take a ferry!
