Сайн байна уу / Sain baina uu! (Hello / how are you in Mongolian!)
My name is Emily, and I’m originally from Reno, Nevada. I spent seven years of my childhood in Xinjiang, China, where I completed elementary school. Growing up in China shaped how I understand culture, identity, and community, and it helped me develop a deeper appreciation for my own heritage and for connecting with people across backgrounds.
I later returned to Reno for high school before moving to Washington, D.C., to attend American University. There, I earned my Bachelor’s in International Studies. During my undergraduate years, I studied and worked in Taiwan and explored countries across Southeast Asia and Central Europe. These experiences strengthened my interest in cross-cultural engagement and inspired me to continue building bridges across the U.S.-China and broader East Asia region.
My early interactions with Mongolian communities in Xinjiang, along with a long-standing curiosity about Mongolia’s history and culture, led me here. Its blend of East Asian geography, Central Asian heritage, and strong nomadic traditions inspired me to learn more.
Now, as an English teacher at a local university, I have the opportunity to engage in daily cross-cultural dialogue and support English education in my community. I’m excited to share my experiences in Mongolia and look forward to connecting with you throughout the school year!
