Lastly, there are boats that people living on the islands on Lake Victoria will use to go from one island to another. People in Uganda use a variety of transportation types, but these are the most common!
In Pennsylvania, I lived in a small, rural town. There were no bicycle paths like there are in some suburban and urban areas. While I would ride a bicycle for fun in the United States during summertime, I was used to driving a car to get to school, buy groceries or visit my friends. This daily habit changed for me, and I now rely on my bicycle to get the things I need. At first, this was challenging because my village has uneven dirt roads, which can be hard to peddle. I also had to become more patient, as riding up the main road takes about half an hour. Whereas in the United States, I could drive five or ten minutes and be at a grocery store. Over time, I have learned to enjoy riding my bicycle. It is a time for me to reflect on my days and greet people passing by. I am grateful for the ability to ride my bicycle, even though, at times, it can be hard work.
Bicycles are popular in the Busia region because they are easily imported from Kenya, and they are more affordable than motorcycles. Many people in my region know how to repair bicycles, which can be a good way of making money. It is more common for women to ride bicycles than motorcycles, so bicycles offer a reliable way of transportation for women and girls. Students and fellow teachers ride their bicycles to school every day, especially those who live far from school.
