Traveler Bio

Hello! My name is Emily Irons, but you can call me Mwalimu (Teacher) Emily. I am a Peace Corps Volunteer living in eastern Uganda near the Kenyan border. I also used to live in northern Uganda too, so I am familiar with many regions in the country of Uganda! I am 23 years old. I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania. I studied Early Childhood / Special Education and English at Thiel College, which is also in Pennsylvania. When I was studying how to become a teacher, I realized that teachers need to know a lot of things. Teachers need to know how to read, write, and count, and teachers also need to know about the world. I learned that good teachers have ideas and stories from many people and places that they share with students.

I started traveling when I was in college. I have visited Italy, England, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Egypt, and many other parts of the world. Traveling to these places gave me knowledge about these countries. It also gave me my own stories and lessons to tell other people, like my students. I travel because it is fun and exciting, but I also travel for my students. Sharing my adventures and experiences with students helps them think about the world beyond textbooks. I am excited to connect with your class. I hope you can connect with the world through my experiences and travels!

Peace Corps Volunteers like me live and work side by side with community members around the world, collaborating on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations. Learn more by clicking here.
