Hi, my name is Emmanuella and I am a senior in college who is studying psychology and statistics. I grew up in New York, and I’m studying abroad as a Gilman Scholar. In my free time I love reading, biking, and exploring different neighborhoods when I can. For the fall semester of my senior year, I decided to study abroad in the West African country of Ghana! I wanted to do this because I want to expand my knowledge about the first African country to gain their independence from colonial rule.
I'm personally interested in this program because it will give me the opportunity to learn more about West Africa and get back in touch with my African roots. Ghana was the first African country to gain its independence from colonial rule in 1957, and compared to the countries that border it, Ghana has done well and is one of the most developed countries in Africa. I want to learn more about that process of freedom and how they were able to achieve it and become the country that they are today. Academically, this program focuses on experiential learning, which draws me in because I learn best when I can experience the things I am doing. I’m excited for the excursions and getting to visit different places in Ghana, because I know that different countries have different cultures within them, and I want to be able to learn as much as I can from the country while I'm there.
