Malta has the highest population of refugees per capita (per person) in the entire European Union (which includes 27 European countries). Additionally, Malta has a population of less than 600,000 people on an island that stretches only nine miles across. Because of this, Malta is a very diverse place. Even though Maltese is a main language of people originally from Malta, English is the shared language that many foreigners and native Maltese people alike can speak. Because of this, learning English is an important step that refugees can take to communicate with others and better understand the world around them in Malta.
This need is being partly met. The only reason I cannot say it is being fully met is that we do not know how many people still need help but are not receiving it. However, by volunteering as a teacher at Blue Door Education, I help make sure that the Maltese community can better meet the need for English education. Blue Door's mission is to provide free English lessons to all refugees in classes that help foster community with others experiencing similar life situations. By teaching lessons, I help students from all over the world practice their speaking skills for all different daily life situations.
