The Landscapes of Israel

The cycle of agriculture means that healthy fruits and veggies are always close at hand and incorporated into most foods served here.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Water scarcity is the biggest problem facing people in Israel. Farmers and families alike are always concerned with the country's reservoirs. Even in the north, yearly rainfall only amounts to about 28 inches of rain. In contrast, New York State receives 45 inches of rain per year on average. In the south of Israel, one can expect an inch of rain or less per year. That is almost nothing! That means that water needs to be highly conserved, because 75% of the country's water is used to grow crops.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Israel has developed agricultural innovation in order to conserve its limited resources. Drip irrigation is now much more efficient, and farmers have created strategies to reduce food waste while crops are being grown, processed, and transported. They have developed more ecologically-friendly ways to control pests, and their water conservation methods are excellent. In Israel, farmers can desalinate (remove the salt) from seawater, and they even developed a machine to create water from air. One of the best things about Israeli innovation is that the people here share their new techniques with farmers all over the world.
