Although the Oman 3165 journey officially begins on November 13th, 2025, my own journey began some 64 years ago. I was fortunate to enjoy an extraordinary childhood, growing up in the countryside on the border between England and Wales. Each day, when I stepped off the school bus, I’d pull on my boots and head out to explore the fields and woods with my dog. Junior school was wonderful. I had an inspirational teacher who read The Hobbit to us and took us outdoors whenever possible. High school, however, proved more challenging. The only subjects that captured my imagination were geography and biology; in the rest, I mostly daydreamed about being outside.
Looking back, I regret not making more of the opportunities school offered. But one day, by sheer luck, I happened to be paying attention when an announcement was made about applying for a six-week expedition to Arctic Norway, conducting scientific research on glaciers and mountains in constant daylight. I had nowhere near the experience required, but at the interview, the leaders saw someone who might truly benefit. How right they were.
