My Chinese classmate joined me this week to go to Din Tai Fung in Banqiao, New Tapei City. Din Tai Fung is one of the most famous restaurants in Taiwan. It was established in 1958 by Bing-Yi Yang, who immigrated to Taiwan from Shanxi, China in 1948. It was originally a cooking oil retail shop but later transformed into a full restaurant in 1972.
Currently, Din Tai Fung has over 170 locations in 13 countries, including the United States (in the states of California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada), Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, Europe and Thailand. The New York Times even named it "one of the top ten gourmet restaurants in the world."
