"Fasnacht" and Farewell

In the Konstanz region, there are such local traditions as the "Konstanz Troll," the "Konstanz Devil," the "Wollmatingen Mushroom Dwarves," and the "Allensbach Swamp Witch" -- all which are still celebrated to this day in the Fasnacht parades, costumes and decorations, along with many others.

Many such strange creatures have a special place in southern German culture, and Fasnacht is a place that they make their biggest appearance.

Right now, between Saturday, February 22 and Tuesday, February 25, the streets of Konstanz are flooded with revelers who have come to partake in the good parades, good food and good drink. Today (Sunday), there was a parade that lasted three hours -- and this is not unusual for Konstanz!  Everyone, even the spectators, were dressed in costumes, and some people change outfits two or three times a day.  Mostly you see devils, werewolves, bears, deer, birds and bumblebees, but people also dress as knights, jesters, pirates and even cowboys. As the groups of paraders pass through the streets, they lead the spectators in song and waves, throwing festoons of confetti and handing out candy to children. It's a really fun experience!

On Tuesday night, at the end of the final procession, there will be a massive bonfire in the old city square. Ho Narro! as the locals say, a greeting that means, "All hail, the Fool!"

It has been pleasant sharing with you a little of German culture over these past few weeks, and Jenny and I both wish you the best in the remainder of your semester.  I hope you've enjoyed what I've had to share and it has given you some ideas to consider.
