Dobar Tek! (Enjoy Your Meal!)

Introduction:

Peka is a traditional Croatian way of cooking where meat, seafood or bread is cooked slowly under a bell-shaped lid covered with hot coals. It creates a delicious, smoky dish filled with its own juices and flavors. The word peka refers to both the meal itself and the iron or clay pot used for cooking. The peka has a large, flat base and a dome-shaped lid. It is a beloved cooking experience and is often made for special occasions. The southern coast of Croatia, called Dalmatia, is especially known for making peka.

What food did I try?:

Hobotnica ispod peke (octopus under the bell). It had roasted potatoes, carrots and onions as well -- my favorite! Octopus has a unique taste and texture. Since I grew up eating it, I really like it. Have you tried octopus before? If not, would you try it?

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Delighted! It’s a tasty and comforting dish that is truly a home-cooked meal. I believe food should be shared, so I enjoyed the meal with my mother, Zlatka. Since she is from Croatia, the dish reminds her of her roots. She lives between Brooklyn and Croatia now, so we like to enjoy traditional Croatian food while she visits me and our family here in Croatia.

My mom and I visited the island Vis where part of our ancestry comes from!
