The kids usually have to help their mothers collect water from local wells in the villages and also help collect wood from the nearby forests. This wood is used to light a fire and cook dinner and other food for the day. Young girls are also responsible for helping their mothers clean the home by sweeping or washing dishes.
Parents usually work selling fruit or fish in the local market. The main market here is named Soko Kuu (Main Market). This is where the main source of money comes from and is then used for school supplies and food for the week.
School here starts at 7:00 a.m. and ends about 3:00 p.m., but children typically travel about 30-40 minutes by bus or dala-dala in order to get to their school. So children here wake up around 5:30 a.m. to have breakfast and get ready, and then they take the local transport to school.
Kids in Iringa usually go to school on their own. They take the local bus (dala-dala) to school and also take it back from school. Once they get off the local bus they walk about 10-20 minutes to get home, usually with their friends.
