Most things on the island have to be brought in from other places like mainland Tanzania and Kenya because the island is too small to produce its own products like shampoo, toilet paper, toothpaste and other everyday items.
People here use a lot of coconut, which can be found all over the island. They drink the juice from the coconut to hydrate themselves and keep fresh in the very hot weather. They also wear a lot of white clothing, which is less hot and is very thin so that they will not sweat too much. Here the locals say that you always have to find another way to solve a problem if the first way doesn't work, so they are very used to adapting to their beautiful island.
