I figured for my last journal to you that I’d share with you some of the buildings and landmarks I get to see!
London has so much history, and walking down the street, you see strong contrasts between the old and the new. For example, this here is a newer building called the Shard (a name that fits it well). It was built in 2009. It’s an office building, but you can go all the way up for an incredible view of the city. To get into town, I usually take a train that stops right underneath the Shard. The tip lights up during the Christmas season!
Just down the road is another tall building which was built in 1675. That’s over a hundred years before America’s Declaration of Independence! This is St. Paul’s Cathedral, one of London’s largest and most beautiful cathedrals. I visited here in 2013 with my family, and I also attended a church service there a few weeks ago. The interior is gorgeous. You can also walk up the dome for a view of the city. It’s a view that I’ll never forget.
Nearby is the Globe Theatre built in 1598, where Shakespeare himself had his plays shown for audiences. My family saw Julius Caesar at the Globe. All the seating is old wooden benches, with standing room in the middle.
