I often visited Ikebukuro to go to the shops located in Sunshine City building complex, which is known for its aquarium.
Ginza: A luxury shopping district comparable to New York’s Fifth Avenue Street or Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California. Located nearby is Roppongi, the cultural district and home to the Roppongi Hill’s Tower Mori Art Museum that I first visited in 2017.
Shin-Okubo: Tokyo’s Korea Town that is home to a Korean community and restaurants serving Korean cuisine.
Meguro: A mostly residential ward south of Shibuya. Its picturesque artsy district Nakameguro is most famous for the flowing Meguro River often used as a backdrop for sakura photos. On one day trip to Meguro, I ate at Curry Station Niagara, a tiny train-decor themed diner that delivers your order to your table by a toy train!
Setagaya: An upscale residential ward, and home to the Gotokuji Temple that has a great collection of maneki neko (beckoning cat) figurines. Within the ward is the hip district called Shimokitazawa which has many cute boutiques, vintage shops and cafes. My favorite cafe is Shirohige’s Cream Puff Factory that serves cream puffs shaped like the anime character Totoro from Miyazaki’s film My Neighbor Totoro.
Yokohama: A port city located in Kanagawa south of Tokyo Prefecture and home to an amusement park, the Cup Noodles Museum, a Chinatown, and the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse historical mall.
During this time I was also searching for internship opportunities.
