In Spain, I rode a cable car (a little car hanging from a wire high in the sky) to get to the top of a mountain! And in Venice, Italy, there are no roads at all. Instead, there are canals full of water, so you have to ride boats to get around. They even have long, special boats in Venice called gondolas that a person stands on and paddles by hand. Can you imagine riding in one of those?
I loved it! In America, we usually use cars to get from place to place. But here in Europe, I have only been in a car once or twice. It was really fun to see how people use many different ways to travel over here!
These different forms of transportation were also a cool way to see new parts of the city that you don’t normally see in a car. In a car, you mostly use big roads and highways, but on a boat, you get to see pretty canals and small streets. And a cable car can take you up to high to places where a road can’t go. It was cool to see these cities in so many new ways that I can’t experience at home.
Yes! The way people get around is absolutely connected to the culture and the environment.
In each place, people choose transportation that fits their city and their way of life. For example, Venice uses boats because the whole city is built on water. Paris uses a subway because the city is big and busy, and trains help people move quickly underground.
