One thing I have noticed is that some Trinis think that all people from the U.S. are rich...and that is definitely not true! Trinidadians also think that people in the U.S. like KFC as much as they do, but I have to tell them that most people I know do not eat it nearly as much as they do. I made a friend in Trinidad who eats KFC nearly three times a week! But to balance out the KFC, there are a lot of open fruit and vegetable markets on the streets in Trinidad, which I don't see at home. I really like these. I buy fruit like watermelon, kiwi, oranges, bananas and plantains, and some veggies like cucumbers, peppers and onions. It is cheaper than shopping at the grocery store.
During my time here in Trinidad, I hope to have more conversations with others outside of my university, so that I can chat with the locals about their culture and mine. I think it is very important to learn about others' perspectives because the world is made up of so many different people. We can't all think the same way!
