The Many Modes of Mexican Transportation

Introduction:

Mexico City is notorious for bad traffic. It comes as no surprise when you think about how many people live and work here. Almost nine million people live within the city limits, but many of the 11 million people living in the surrounding suburbs commute into the city to work. To avoid this traffic, a number of unique solutions have been implemented to allow people the freedom to get around.

How do people get around?:

While many people drive cars, Mexico City has a vast metro and bus network. The metro is like an underground train. It can be faster than driving during rush hour and before major events and holidays since it goes under the traffic! Sometimes street vendors or musicians will get on the metro to work and earn money. They will play instruments, sing or tell jokes. I have seen them selling everything from headphones to school supplies to ice cream on the buses.

The bus system above ground can be confusing to navigate. There are so many different routes, and most of them are hard to find information about online. Like many things here in Mexico, you usually just have to ask someone who knows. The buses I take most often are called the Metrobus. They run long routes directly up and down major roads in the city, so it is harder to get lost on them.
