Dubrovnik is a very old city, and some parts of it were built hundreds of years ago. The historic area called Dubrovnik Old Town has narrow stone streets that were built long before cars even existed. Because of this, cars are not allowed in Old Town, and the best way to explore it is by walking.
The city is also built on hills right next to the sea, so some roads are steep and winding. Using buses helps people travel up and down these hills more easily. At the same time, using public transportation instead of driving everywhere helps reduce traffic and pollution in such an important historic place.
Dubrovnik is surrounded by beautiful nature and the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea, so many people care a lot about protecting the environment. Using buses and walking helps keep the city cleaner and quieter.
One fun way to see the city is by riding the Dubrovnik Cable Car. This cable car has cabins that hang from and travel along an aerial cable (a cable in the air) connecting two stations. It takes you high above the city to the top of Mount Srđ. From the top, you can see the orange rooftops of Old Town, the city walls and the bright blue Adriatic Sea.
