Hungarian History: The Kingdom of Hungary (1526-1867)

The occupation of Hungary by the Ottoman Empire had several influences on Hungary today. Namely, the Turkish-style bathhouses that are iconic in Budapest and a country-wide love for coffee.

Hungary was under the control of the Habsburgs and the Ottomans until 1683 when the Ottomans finally tried to siege Vienna. With the help of other European kingdoms (especially Poland), the Ottomans were finally defeated, and their empire retreated from Europe. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, there were several uprisings in Hungary against Habsburg rule. The Hungarian royal family was allowed to remain under the Habsburgs, but not as rulers of the country. At several different points, factions of the Hungarian nobility believed that Hungary should be independent again. These feelings culminated into the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The Hungarians were not successful, and Hungary fell under the absolute rule of the Habsburgs. However, over the next two decades, the Habsburgs would face several military defeats alongside continued unrest in Hungary. After a major defeat by the Prussians in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, the Habsburgs realized that something had to change. They cut their losses with the even more powerful Hungarian nobility fighting for independence, and the Dual Monarchy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was born.
