Interview with a Czech Student

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

"It depends on the day. I start school at 8:00 a.m. and leave at 3:00 p.m. on most days. On Fridays, I leave school at 1:00 p.m. On Tuesdays, I leave school at 5:00 p.m."

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

"I walk to school. I walk by myself or with my older sister. It is only 15 minutes to walk to school. I like being able to walk. Some of my friends take the bus for a long time to get to school."

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

"I eat lunch at the local canteen (cafeteria). They serve lunch every day. It is mostly the same, but I do really like when they have chicken and sauce. They have it with some kind of rice. It is my favorite."

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

"I speak Czech, German and English at school. My first language is Czech (Ahoy = Hello). My second and third languages are German and English. I like English the most because the classes are fun. Everyone here speaks at least two languages. I want to get better at English."

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

"My name, Honza, is pretty common. Also Jakub (Jacob in English) is popular. For girls, Lenka or Stepanka (Stephanie in English) is common."

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

"I study Czech, English, Gernan, Science, Social Studies and Math. English is my favorite class because I feel like my skills are okay from watching movies and TV in English."
