Various leaves, bean sprouts, lime slices and sauces are included on the side as optional additions to enhance the flavor. Eating pho has been one of my favorite culinary experiences in Vietnam.
Pho is intimately connected to the local environment. The ingredients come from the surrounding farms, many of which are in the Mekong Delta (the "rice bowl" of Vietnam). Fresh rice noodles are made from rice flour, while the herbs and raw meat also come from Vietnam. Many dishes here are rice-based, because the crop is abundant throughout Vietnam.
