All I Want for Christmas is Castañas Asadas

Introduction:

Walking home from my university classes at 8:30 PM on a Friday, without dinner and in the dark, is not the most enjoyable adventure. I take the main street a lot of the time, and it's always llena de gente (packed with people).  But it's also such a good place to see Alcalá de Henares come to life. The restaurants are open, people are out in full force, and, to my delight, street vendors are now starting to sell some autumn food!

What food did I try?:

My new gastronomical (food-based) adventure this week was castañas asadas, or roasted chestnuts.  I've never had a chestnut before, if you can believe it! But I already knew that I liked other types of roasted nuts, like pecans, peanuts, and almonds. I had seen the stands on the street a few times during the week, but usually they were closed when I walked by, so I was quite excited to find that they were open on my late walk back to my piso (apartment) on Friday night.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

First off, I was very cold. In Spain, I'm what's called a friolero, which translates roughly to someone who's always cold. And since the nights here are getting cooler, that's no good for me.  So I was looking for something a little bit warming.

When I actually ate the castañas, they didn't dissapoint.
