The Human Right to Access Water

Otherwise, families install a water filter in their house to filter the city water.

Most families here in El Salvador don’t even have the luxury of water coming to their house every day. A lot of people can't pay for bottled water or a filter for their house. In many communities, water only comes once every two weeks for about one hour each time. Do you think this is sufficient?

Luckily, I get water mostly every day, but sometimes we go about eight to 12 hours without getting any water. As I write this article, we’re in one of those dry spells. Hopefully, the water comes soon so I can wash the massive pile of dishes that’s accumulated in the kitchen.

How would your life change without a constant source of running water?

Why does the community have this need?:

Until I didn’t have a constant source of running water, I never realized how necessary water is to my daily life. Without adjusting to the lack of water, we wouldn’t be able wash clothes, drink water from the filter, flush the toilet, take a shower, cook or wash dishes that pile up in the sink.

When you become aware of the role that water plays in your life, you realize that it’s pretty important. Luckily we’ve been able to adjust to this problem by making a few interventions that I'll mention in the next section.

How would you deal with not having water for eight to ten hours a day? Or even for weeks on end?

Is this need being met? How?:

This need isn’t really being met by the government, so the people who don’t get water have to make adjustments to live how they need to in times when they don’t get water.
