The Human Right to Access Water

Introduction:

What are some of the most basic needs that you can think of? Take a few moments to think about what you need in order to live. I’ll give you a hint: remember, as human beings we have bodies, and those bodies have biological needs! What are some of these needs that you know about?

Among our many biological needs, the one I’d like to talk about is the need for water. Have you always been able to drink water when you want some? Growing up in Midland, Michigan, I never had to worry about how I would get my next drink of water. However, in a town about 45 minutes away from me, the story was (and still is) very different. Those living in Flint haven’t been able to drink the water from their taps for the past five years. Their water is polluted with lead, and nobody has done enough to fix the problem that Flint still faces today.

Do you know of any towns that have had a water crisis? Can people access clean and sufficient water in El Salvador? Let’s find out!

What community need did I learn about?:

Before coming to El Salvador, I knew that water access was a pretty big deal. Here, it’s not common at all for people to drink from the tap. Most of the water that comes to the house is polluted and dangerous to drink. A lot of families buy the big “water cooler” tanks of water that are called garrafones here.
