Moving Around El Salvador... But How?

Is this way of getting around connected to the culture and environment, How?:

Nobody likes taking the bus, but this is what’s necessary in the city for people who don’t have the money for a taxi, Uber or their own car. An anthropologist (a scientist who studies people and how they evolved over thousands of years or more) friend of mine once said that they loved experiencing the "Salvadoran reality" by riding the bus. However, I'm not a fan of "experiencing reality" by taking advantage of a situation that others need to go through every day.

What's a good takeaway from this post? Safety and security really do affect the city and the way in which people move around. If one does not have the freedom or funds to buy a car or take a taxi every day, they have to live with the reality of putting themselves at a certain level of risk wherever they go. How do you get around New York? Do any of your friends or family get around differently? If so, why?
