In the interior of Bahia is a city called Cachoeira that I visited in the first month in Brazil. It is a location that tourists visit when coming to Bahia due to it being a center for Candomble.
Cachoeira, which means waterfall in Portuguese, is a historic city in Bahia. It is known for its Afro-Brazilian community, religious heritage, and its centuries-old architecture. The Rio Paraguaçu and the reservoir in the Recôncavo are charming features of the landscape. Its shores are overgrown with mangroves.
The city is found on the Paraguaçu River which provides an important economic link between the interior of Bahia and Salvador. The river starts in the Chapada Diamantina and flows 336 miles into the Bay of All Saints. The waterfalls near Cachoeira are important for water transport of goods. Because it is a place surrounded by nature, (rivers, mountains and valleys) the people are able to export sugar, cotton and tobacco.
