Domingos are calm around Spain. Nearly all of the local businesses are closed, including supermercados, restaurantes, y tiendas. It's common to sleep in on Sundays and enjoy lunch with one's family. My friend Ana and her mother María invited me to enjoy la comida (lunch) with them. Family meals are very special in España. Do you share a special meal with your familia?
I learned about Spain's Sunday family lunch tradition. María (la madre de Ana) cooked Pisto, a delicious vegetable dish, colloquially referred to as "Spanish ratatouille." The stew traditionally includes tomates, cebollas, pimientas, calabacín, y berenjena (eggplant). María's version also had setas (mushrooms).
While María prepared el pisto, Ana and I walked to a popular local panadería. At the panadería, we purchased freshy baked pan to enjoy with lunch. The bakery had a line all the way outside the door! The best bakeries often have una fila (a line) on Sunday mornings.
