Todos Santos, the Oasis and the Ocean

Introduction:

Todos Santos has been named a Puebla Magica (magical town) for the natural wonders it has, like the oasis in the center of the town. The ocean, desert and oasis create a diverse environment with many smaller ecosystems and numerous unique species. Each of these factors influence life in Todos Santos in numerous ways, including weather, food and common jobs. Keep reading to learn more!

What makes this environment special or different?:

Todos Santos is in the south of Baja California Sur, a state known for its widespread semi-arid desert. This means that many places get less than 10-20 inches of rain per year. However, Todos Santos is unique because it has an oasis right in the middle of the town. Oases are rare, fertile pieces of land found inside of deserts. The oasis in Todos Santos gets its water from runoff that comes down a local mountain.

Additionally, the town is right next to the ocean. With the exception of the oasis, the town is very dry, even though it’s walking distance from the beach. I have been here for nearly two months and it hasn’t rained even a drop! Many Todosanteños (people from Todos Santos) tell me that sometimes there are droughts that last almost a decade.
