Nature in the City

Introduction:

When I first got to Sydney, I was so excited about the beaches, the coastal walks and how much time people spend outside. People here take time to enjoy their environment. But the longer I’ve been here, the more I’ve started to notice that it’s deeper than that. The ocean, the weather and the landscape aren’t just part of the scenery. They actually shape how people live their day-to-day lives. This field note looks at how people in Sydney interact with and adapt to the environment around them.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Sydney’s environment is a part of everyday life. The ocean, beaches and parks aren’t just places that tourists visit. These spaces are also built into the daily routines of the people who live here. It’s normal to see people swimming, walking along the coast and spending time outside throughout the day. The city here is very close to nature. You can be in a busy urban area and be at the beach or on a coastal walk within minutes. At the same time, the environment feels active and a bit unpredictable, especially the ocean, which people clearly respect. Things like lifeguards and warning flags show how people have adapted to living with it safely. Overall, Sydney feels different because nature isn’t separate from daily life; it’s something people constantly live with.
