Sweden has a long-standing reputation of being one of the most environmentally sustainable countries in the world. Experiencing the practices first-hand in Stockholm, I saw how Swedes would perform seemingly mundane tasks in order to be environmentally conscious. While it's been a year since I lived abroad, I have taken what I learned in Sweden and tried to do what I can to help preserve the environment back home in any way possible.
I learned about recycling! This is a simple task that everyone can do. I also became very conscious about how much waste I produce. Not only that, I learned about some of the strategies that Sweden has invented to give incentive to its citizens to be more environmentally friendly, including a plastic and metal bottle recycling program inside grocery stores, not using any plastic bags in stores, making public transport highly efficient to allow people to use that method instead of using carbon-heavy personal vehicles, and much more.
Sweden specifically doesn't have a need to recycle and take precautionary environmental measures to survive economically, but the Swedes are taking matters into their own hands to protect the environment. They are doing their part to help protect the planet and promote longevity for the future generations.
