At home, I am used to one way of cooking, but things sometimes work differently in Delhi. Here, I have to be open to new experiences and tastes. This week I encountered a new food: delicious daal!
Daal makhani (lentils in a red cream sauce) is one of my favorite North Indian foods. It tastes sort of like vegetarian chili: warm, comforting, and a little spicy! It is usually served with flatbread, rice and vegetables.
I was curious to try something new. Also the vibrant colors involved in pairing yellow lentils with tomato sauce and brown flat bread cheered me up!
Making daal makhani isn't too hard if you know your way around the kitchen. You need lentils, onion, garlic, oil, tomato sauce, yogurt, butter, and some Indian spices.
1) Boil lentils in water.
2) Chop the garlic and onion into small pieces. Add these to a pan of heated oil.
3) Add in the spices and allow to cook until the onion is soft.
4) Pour the tomato sauce into the pan. Allow the mixture to bubble.
5) Add yogurt and butter to the tomato sauce for a creamy, tangy taste.
6) Stir the cooked lentils into the sauce. Done!
7) Serve hot with bread and rice!
