Colonias, or neighborhoods, break the city into more manageable pieces. Locals can go to grocery stores, restaurants and movie theaters all while walking within their colonia. When I first arrived, I wanted to travel to other colonias frequently to explore all of the gems that the city has to offer. However, I quickly learned that it was just as fun to find the local gems in my neighborhood. Now I enjoy my local coffee shop and regular Thursday-night restaurant.
Many issues have arisen with the growing number of people in the city. Many people want to “venture outside of city life” by traveling to parks like Los Dinamos to get some fresh air and be in nature. There are also more pressing issues like the questions surrounding the city’s water supply. Many wonder if the city will be able to sustain itself and its citizens with life’s most vital resource.
Even before the Spanish conquistadores, the city was a metropolis. Tenochtitlan, now Mexico City, was the capital of the Mexica empire. In fact, you can visit pre-Hispanic ruins located not too far from the Zócalo, or city center. This city has been a lively thriving metropolis for a long time, and I hope that it will continue to thrive for many generations to come.
