There are a lot of different types of food in Germany. There are old foods, like sauerkraut, and there are new foods, like Döner, a popular German version of a Turkish kebab. Traditional foods in this part of Germany include pretzels, sausages and roast meat. People don’t eat “German” food all the time and instead eat plenty of modern and international food.
That being said, I like to try traditional Bavarian foods and learn how to make them. You can learn a lot about the history of a place by learning about its food.
One of my favorite foods is called Knödel. It’s pronounced k-NEW-del. Don’t forget to say the "k"! Knödel are a type of dumpling. The dumpling is made out of bread or potato and then boiled. For dinner, you can put Knödel in soup or gravy. And for dessert, you can put plums or apricots in Knödel to make them sweet.
At first I thought I wouldn’t like Knödel because they looked a little strange. But there’s something about them that makes them delicious! Knödel are great in gravy or mushroom sauce because they soak up all of the sauce around them. Afterwards, they keep you full for hours.
