Green Germany

In big cities, there are more trains and fewer cars. The big cities closest to Mallersdorf are called Straubing, Regensburg, and Landshut. Munich is a little farther away. To get to the big cities, you can take the train. Do you remember what the train system is called? It’s called the Deutsche Bahn, or DB. DB trains can take you to almost every town in Germany. They are very clean and comfortable. Big cities also have subway systems, streetcars and buses. The subway system is called the Untergrundbahn, or U Bahn. That means “underground rail.” I really like the subways in Munich because they’re always super clean.

One more thing! In general, many people ride their bikes, here, to get around. People prefer to ride their bikes because it is healthier and better for the environment. If you go to a big city like Munich and Regensburg, you will see that the sidewalk is often divided in half. That’s because one half of the sidewalk is for people riding bikes, and the other half is for people walking. Pay attention while walking on the sidewalk, or else you could accidentally walk in front of a bike!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I live in a rural area, but I don’t have a car. When I want to leave Mallersdorf, I have to take the train. Sometimes taking a train can be a little difficult. The Mallersdorf train station is small, and not a lot of people use it. Since so few people use the train, the conductor doesn’t always stop at Mallersdorf. Instead, I have to ask the conductor to stop at Mallersdorf for me. The first time I did this, I was a little confused.
