I have traveled pretty far this week because I am in Lima for medical reasons. It takes me about seven hours to get to Lima from my site. First, I leave my town on a very small bus that takes me to the next town over, which is two hours away. After that, I get on a bigger bus for the five-hour journey to Lima. Overall, the travel is not too bad—it is just long!
Traveling anywhere in Peru is a journey! The farthest I have traveled so far is actually right now, as I am typing this. I was just in Lima for some medical appointments, and I am now heading to IST, where my coworkers who work in water, sanitation and hygiene meet for a week to go over our future projects for the upcoming year. Our IST is in Cajamarca, which is about 18 hours from Lima (wayyyy up north). I am taking an “overnight” bus. I left Lima at 2:30 p.m. and will arrive in Cajamarca the next day at 6:00 a.m. I like taking night buses because I get to sleep most of the way—well, mostly!
This week, I got around using a car service called InDrive. It is very similar to Uber in the United States, but the main difference is that you get to offer the fare. Sometimes, the cars can be a little questionable. I took one this week with a lovely older man, but halfway through the drive, his tire blew out on the highway.
