Children of Rwanda

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

Children speak English, Kinyarwanda and French at school. They are taught in all three languages at different points of the day.

They say "Muraho" in Kinyarwanda and "Bonjour" in French to say Hello.

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

Emmanuel, Telka, Aline, Celestine, Jean Bosco, Janvier and Mercy

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

In Rwanda, the subjects are Geography, History, Social/Religous Studies, Physical Education, Chemistry, Mathematics, Fine Arts/Crafts, Kinyarwanda and French.

One child that I spoke to told me her favorite subject was math. She enjoys dealing with logic and having one correct answer.

What is your homework like?:

There is similar homework to what you are used to like worksheets and studying terms to be memorized. However, in some schools, families must pay the teachers to check the homework so often times, parents will just check it themselves.

What do you like to do after school? Do you have a favorite sport or game?:

Soccer! Many children play soccer in fields across town after school. Small children like to play with this particular toy made from a thin tire and practically a stick. They run behind the tire and push it with the stick and try to keep up.

What kinds of music do you listen to?:

Mostly gospel music. Many Rwandans are religious, and church music plays in their homes and cars often.
